City of Cockburn
The City of Cockburn in Western Australia is a Perth LGA located in the southern suburbs of the city. It lies 8 km south of Fremantle and 24 km south of the Perth CBD. The City covers an area of 167 square kilometres and in 2006 had a 75,000 residents.
Cockburn was named after Cockburn Sound a 100 km square marine embayment off the coast of Perth. It is pronounced Co-burn Sound and starts just south of Fremantle, heads west to Stragglers Rocks, then south east to Carnac Island, and follows Garden Island south to the Rockingham Foreshore. A causeway links the mainland with Garden Island where a large Naval base is situated.
In 1871, the Fremantle Road District was created to cover the area to the south and east of Fremantle. In the first years of the Board's existence its function was to provide the roads that linked Fremantle to other parts of the Colony. By the early 20th Century the District was divided into Wards and in 1923 the District received a large amount of from Jandakot Road District. It was renamed Cockburn in 1955 to underline the desire for independence from Fremantle.
